Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer - THOUGHTS...

Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer
THOUGHTS...

Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer
Introducing Stila's new Prime Pot, a waterproof eye shadow primer that promises flawless, creaseless eye shadow wear. A revolutionary polymer adheres to eye shadow and allows for shadow to wear all day and night.

This innovative waterproof formula is crease resistant and extends eye shadow wear all day. Prime Pot also creates flawlessly smooth lids and keeps excess oil at bay.

The two lightweight eye shadow primers are matte and universally flattering for all skintones.

Size: 0.14 oz
Price: $20

  • Apply Prime Pots with a concealer brush like Stila's #11 or #26 brushes. Use the brush to dust the Prime Pot on the eyelid. A little goes a long way.
  • Use Prime Pots to smooth the eye area and cut the redness, creating the perfect canvas for makeup application. Wear this "primed" look alone or with makeup on top. Either way, the eye look will last all day.
  • A great muted lip can be achieved by mixing Prime Pot with Camellia Convertible Color.
  • Prime Pot also works great as an under eye concealer!

The Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer is priced at for $20 for 0.14 oz of product. Now, the price is within the usual range for mid-end brands so no issue here. You do get a decent amount of product but it is not on the high side of the spectrum. I compared the price of both primers in pots and primers in tubes BUT be sure than the primers in tubes are a different beast (liquid-like versus cream) and the amount of product will be drastic. The number of uses will be around the same even though the product amounts are so different.

Another thing of note is the packaging (which we will get into later), glass packaging is more costly than plastic and jars are more pricey than tubes. If you factor those into the price then we can even out the playing a little bit more.

The price is as I would expect for Stila products and what I would pay for a good primer anyway so I am not bothered by this at all. The amount of product does leave me a bit vary though since it's on the low side. But from experience I also know that the shelf-life of cream products is not the best so it is better to use it all up before it dries out. You may get more product elsewhere but you may not get full use out of it before it turns on you. Either way $20 for a good primer is money well spent :)

The Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer is available online at Sephora and Ulta and in Sephora and Ulta stores. It is also available online at the Stila website.

The Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer comes in a small glass jar with a solid plastic screw-top lid. This type of jar is similar to Stila Smudgepots as well as M∙A∙C Paintpots. The thing to keep in mind with cream products is the longevity or shelf-life of the product. You can get 100 oz. of product but if it dries out in 2 weeks it really is a waste of money (no matter the price). The glass jars preserve the creaminess and therefore the life-span of your product. Add to that the heavy duty sturdy screw-top lid that closes tightly in place to protect the product from exposure to air. From my experience this type of packaging is ideal for cream products and I haven't had any issues with the product 'drying out' too quickly. And of course traveling with these is a breeze!

The Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer is touted as a waterproof and creaseproof eyeshadow primer that creates a smooth, flawless finish and long-lasting wear for eyeshadows. It is matte in finish and claims to keep oils at bay.

There are two skintone colors available which is a nice option to have - Taffy and Caramel. I picked up Caramel which is a creamy mid-tone caramel beige with a peach/orange undertone. It is the darker of the two shades so if you are within my shade range (NC45) then this will be the perfect color for you. It will show up lighter on darker skintones which shouldn't be an issue but it may be a bit too orange for lighter skintones so I would say test it out first to be sure. It is nicely pigmented with opaque color payoff in one swipe - a little will go a long way.

The primer itself is very creamy (dreamy creamy) and smooth and blends nicely onto the eyelids. However, it is a matte finish and dries quickly so you must work fast when applying it to the skin and be sure moisturize ahead of time. This primer will accentuate dry spots so I recommend using only if you have normal to oily lids.

The primer is indeed waterproof but I am not sure how this helps if you apply (non-waterproof) powder eyeshadow on top. It won't make your eyeshadow waterproof unless I assume you mix it in with pigments. Experiment to try! But if you can definitely wear the primer alone for a nice waterproof finish on the eyelids. Again, not sure when you would need this waterproof power (maybe you wish to swim in makeup).

As far as the biggest claim of all - crease-proof and long-wearing! When used with powder eyeshadow, this primer gives a full 8+ hours of wear without fading or creasing. However, if you have natural creases/lines on your eyelid then the product can settle into these creases/lines and simulate creasing. Also, if you with a crease-prone liquid or cream eyeshadow you will experience some level of creasing...but this is not a direct cause of the primer but rather the 'crease-prone' additional product.

I actually quite like the Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer and it is almost a dead-ringer for M∙A∙C Paintpots specifically my long discontinued love - M∙A∙C Layin' Low Paintpot. And like with paintpots I still apply a thin layer of a liquid-like primer, such as Urban Decay Primer Potion or Too Faced shadow Insurance, before using the primer. But I tested the primer on it's own with no issues apart for minor settling in my resilient lines. These are also a bit more creamy than M∙A∙C Paintpots so they glide on a bit better without any drag.

Another bonus to this primer, or specifically this Caramel color, is that it can also double as a color corrector/concealer due to it's peachy/orange undertone. It can be used under the eyes to cancel out the blue/green that can show up in or dark circles. Again be mindful that it dries quickly which can be a bit overwhelming for the sensitive under-eye area. Moisturize well if you choose to try this out.

There is no mention of the primer adding to the color intensity of eyeshadows which is a bit peculiar since most primers will claim this. But YES it does add vibrancy to your eyeshadow colors since it provides a great base for the color to cling to. Brights will be brighter and darks...darker!

The Stila Prime Pot Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer is a great eyeshadow primer and a welcomed addition to my arsenal. I am impressed with the creaminess of the primer and long-wear I get from my eyeshadows when I use this primer. The primer also intensifies the color of your eyeshadows and prevents creasing throughout wear. Shhhh....but I think I found a great replacement for my M∙A∙C Layin' Low Paintpot! If you are my skintone and are looking for a great neutral primer/base then look no further. Lighter skin lovelies check out the Taffy shade. Just be weary of the fast drying time and orange undertone which can be a bit too stark on some skintones. I 100% recommend this product for oily lids! Must try!
