The NYX Nude on Nude Eyeshadow/Lipgloss Set is priced at $25 for 0.85 oz (net wt.). In the set you get 20 eyeshadows and 10 lipglosses which seems like quite a deal. I would expand my price comparisons but I think most people are more interested in how this palette stacks up against the famous (or infamous) Urban Decay Naked Palette. After all, this is meant to be a dupe right?
Well, as far as eyeshadows go you get more shades with the NYX Nude on Nude Palette (20 vs. 12) but you get more product with the Urban Decay Naked Palette (0.60 oz vs. 0.56 oz). The Urban Decay Naked Palette also comes with a mini primer potion and a full sized brush ($26 value) both of which add value to the palette since they are great products on their own. The NYX Nude on Nude Palette has 10 lipglosses and 2 plastic applicators which for me are useless - the lipglosses are barely tinted petroleum jelly and the applicators are scratchy little bastards.
So if we break down the value of the eyeshadows in these palettes - $25 (NYX) vs. $48-$26 = $22 (Urban Decay) - Urban Decay actually comes out on top in the price/quantity ratio. But of course you can't buy the Naked Palette without the brush so you still have to pay for the brush and the primer potion ensemble. If you want value for your buck then Urban Decay is the better choice but if you simply want a neutral palette then NYX is cheaper in price. Slice it whichever way fits your preferences : )

Currently the NYX Nude on Nude Palette is only available on the NYX website or on Amazon. I am hoping the palette will become available at the usual NYX retailers but so far no such luck.
The NYX Nude on Nude Palette come packaged in a compact rectangular bronze palette with a snap-fit tab. The NYX logo and Nude on Nude is printed on the outside in a creamy nude color. Inside the eyeshadows are arranged in 2 rows of 10 with a full length mirror in the lid and a pull out tray for the 10 lipglosses and 2 toss-out applicators. The lid also has little peek-a-boo windows which give a glance at the eyeshadows inside. The palette is not fancy or pretty but it's very functional.
The palette is sturdy and lightweight which makes it good for travel. However, I wouldn't leave it loose to shake around because the plastic material is not the thickest or most solid so I can see it breaking easily if dropped and smashed. Also, the pull-out tray of lipglosses, although not loose, can still open inadvertently and create a mess since there is no securement clasp. Another note is that the eyeshadow lid is a tad too secure and takes some muscle and maybe a small implement to pop it open....great for protection but annoying for daily use.
There are 20 neutral eyeshadow shades to choose from light to dark with a mixture of matte, satin and shimmer textures. I think the assortment of colors is actually quite phenomenal in this little palette. NYX got it right!
There are a few highlights shades - matte and shimmer, deeper crease or night-time shades and a few silver/bronze/golden shades tossed in. There are also a great selection of cool and warm tones that will work with any skintone under the sun. There are no names for the eyeshadow shades or even numbers so keeping track (for bloggers especially) is not the easiest thing.

The eyeshadows are smooth and soft especially the shimmer shades. However, they are not as creamy as the Urban Decay Naked Palette eyeshadows and can come off a bit powdery on the skin. This can be assuaged by using a primer and/or base before applying the eyeshadows. A primer/base will also improve the pigmentation of these eyeshadows. The pigmentation is decent overall (shimmer and deeper shades are more pigmented) but a primer is almost necessary to get good color payoff and to save yourself from the fallout demons. They blend decently but lose pigmentation if overblended - which is very easy to do with these. It's best to pat these on the lid rather than sweeping them on the lid. A dense eyeshadow brush will also help with application over a fluffy brush.
The eyeshadows are relatively small so I can see you running out of a go-to shade very easily. Each of the eyeshadows in the Urban Decay Palette are almost twice the size of each of the NYX Nude on Nude eyeshadows.
The lipglosses are almost a non-factor for me because quite frankly they are useless. They are poorly tinted and sticky except for the one red shade. They don't wear well or show up well on the lips. Skip!
I think this palette is a good choice if you are seeking a cheaper alternative to the Urban Decay Naked Palette. It is a good palette and has its own merits but I suggest you invest in a good primer/base to use with these eyeshadows. Also, use patting motions to apply these rather than sweeping motions. The lipglosses may as well not exist in the palette for what they are worth. While the quality and pigmentation cannot be compared with higher end brands I still think this is a good starter kit or a nice addition to a neutral collection.
Have you tried this palette? What do you think?
These are great highlighter shades that show up well on darker skin.
Great smoky shades.
Beautiful colors. The gold, pewter and chocolate shades are rich in color.
These are the most pigmented of the eyeshadows and they are super smooth!
The lipglosses do not show up well on darker skin due to the light pigmentation.
Great swatches and review as always, I'll have to add this to my Christmas wish list :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. I had this one but i gave it away and bought Urban Decay Naked. I find the package breakable and the pigments of the shadows poor.
ReplyDeleteI agree w/ your review. I've had this for a while. I was excited to get it, but I don't reach for it often. I prefer long lasting stuff for an 8hr wk day. A good base for me=NARS smudgeproof & maybe something else like a paint pot for oomph. LOL & the l/g are more like balms to me. Good for travel b/c it's compact. Thanks for sharing.
