My 4 Ps
Price
Each pencil costs $20 for 0.1 oz of product. If you compare the 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils to the existing 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils which cost $17 for 0.04 oz, you will see that you get 2-1/2 times the product for $3 more. How about a similar product such the MAC Greasepaint Sticks (no more Shadesticks) which cost $17.50 for 0.03 oz...again you get more than 2-1/2 times the product for $2.50 more.
Matched up against NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils which costs from $2.50 to $4.99 for 0.18 oz, the 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils are obviously more expensive but the quality and versatility of the Urban Decay Pencils far outweigh their drugstore rival.
Now, if I weighed these against another product which is not in pencil form but is the same cream eyeshadow concept, my thoughts may shake a little. The MUFE Aqua Cream Colors are generally the same concept with a multitude of colors but costs $22 for 0.21 oz. Yes...twice the size for $2 more.
The pencil form is more convenient for application but you may still use a brush for blending plus sharpening the pencil means losing some of the product as well. Either way, I just had to put that out there.
So with that being said, I think the value is based on your preference. I honestly don't the price is too high considering the versatility and quality of the formula. But there are cheaper or more value based alternatives.
Packaging
The 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils come packaged as a jumbo eye pencil with a metallic cap similar to the existing Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Liner Pencils. The pencil itself and the back-end are colored coded to match the color of the product which is a nice touch...no need to remove the cap to see what color it is.
I must commend Urban Decay on the cap design as well. The cap (you know...the cover) is very secure and sturdy with a plastic insert to protect the pencil tip from crushing against the sides. This also helps to ensure that the product doesn't dry out and harden when not in use.
Even the box is nifty with a chrome finish and sparkly loveliness. LOL!
Product
The pencils come in 12 different shades with mainly neutrals and a couple of brights mixed in. The product itself is creamy and even the sparkly shades apply smoothly. They are incredibly smudge-proof, waterproof and crease proof to almost a fault! You will need makeup remover for these! They also blend easily onto the skin or with each other.
The shades are pigmented and true to color with the lightest shades being Sin, Lit, Midnight Cowboy and Morphine. The shimmery shades (Sin, Lit, Rehab, Mercury, Wasteland) apply buttery smooth and even. However, the sparkly shades while smooth can lead to some clumping if layered too thickly.
The jumbo pencil is easy to use and covers a large area quickly and with no fuss. There are similar colors in the Eye Liner version so if you already use the liners as bases or would like to, these are a good (better value) option.
The pencils all glide on easily and are nicely pigmented and smooth. The product dries quickly so you have to work fast because once they set...THEY SET! They look great on their own for a wash of color and topped with eyeshadow. They are longwearing (makeup remover!) and do not feel heavy or wet on the skin.
They are great for all over color but the tip may be just a bit too big for lining the lashline (upper and lower). I would say they live up to everything Urban Decay has touted. There is no creasing with these and the color does not fade throughout wear.
The standout shades for me are: Clinic, Mercury and Delinquent in that order!
I found that the darker shades - Delinquent and Clinic left a slight stain on the skin after removing them.
Overall
There are no matte shades here...but then again Urban Decay doesn't do matte liners...I would love to see them do it though. Anyway I digress...The colors are fun and the are longwearing. Great product to try if you are already in love with the 24/7 Glide On Eye Liner Pencils and would like some of the colors in a jumbo form for say...eyeshadow bases. If you don't mind the price I say go for a couple of these!

ReplyDeletei love the colors I just hate the price...lol I want them all I usually spend no more than $3 on eyeliner it's one those makeup items I never splurge on but I really love all them ahhh I'm tempted now
ReplyDeleteNo prob Nickie. Yep definitely try these out.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha Hershey! Great minds think alike :)
I agree Ev!
They r nice pencils Andrea. They r new for Urban Decay - Spring 2011.
U r welcome Saadeh. Beautiful color choices.
I hear that Senorita. They r more than an eyeliner though...they r more like shadow pencils. But definitely reserve the splurge for something u really love.
I remember reading the e-mail from Urban Decay when these came out and I thought these would crease like crazy, I haven't tried the 24/7 pencils though. Do you find they crease? And would you still use a primer underneath them?
ReplyDeleteHey Arezu hon. No creasing at all here. And they stay put like u wouldn't believe with or without primer. But I still use a primer for everything...I like a protective layer between my skin and any product I use on my eyes. Personal preference :)
ReplyDeleteWhat would you recommend for a neutral base? Get one of these, a paint pot, or a MUFE aqua cream?
ReplyDeleteBTW I appreciate that you keep your blog UPDATED! Yes indeed!
For a neutral everyday base definitely get a Paintpot. These are more fun colors.
ReplyDeleteoh...and thanks too hon :)
